ELECTRICAL SAFETY AT HOME

Electricity is a versatile energy but it has to be safely used. Failure to take precautions against electrical hazards may result in injuries or property damage or both. Control of electrical hazards is neither difficult nor very expensive but ignoring those leads to serious accidents.

ELECTRICAL INJURIES

ELECTRICAL SHOCK:

Flow of electrical current through human body is the cause of electrical shock. The damages done when a person receives electrical shock are:

  • The electrical current flows through nerves, muscles causing disturbance in their normal functions.
  • If its path is through the heart, the accident can be fatal.
  • A person may fall from height as he may loose balance on receiving a shock.
  • A person may be thrown away at the same level causing him bodily injury.
ELECTRICAL BURNS:
  • Electrical burns are caused by electrical flashes if a body part is within flashing distance of a high voltage.
  • Electrical burns are caused due to prolonged contact of body with naked live electrical high voltage wire.
  • Electrical short circuit may lead to electrical fires which is also a main reason to cause electrical fire burns.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF ELECTRICAL INJURY?

In case a victim is not breathing/not making sufficient respiratory effort on his/her own after electrical shock, Artificial Respiration can be applied on the victim. In case of cardiac arrest due to electric shock, the victim should be given a cardiac massage (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) along with artificial respiration. Call for a doctor immediately without wasting further time. Do not crowd around the victim. Allow free passage of air.
